How to Identify Fraudulent Collections Activity
As part of an ongoing effort to provide complete financial protection and education, MyCashNow wants our customers to know about fraud relating to the payday loan industry. Knowledge is the best protection against these scams, so familiarize yourself with the details below in the unlikely event that you become the target of such activity. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Trade Commission have both recently investigated several such scams, and the FTC shut down one scam that had stolen more than $5 million over the last two years.

Scammers often claim to be collecting on behalf of legitimate lenders like MyCashNow. Many phony collectors have demanded verification of bank account information, or that the customer sends money by wire transfer or credit card. Some of them have claimed to be attorneys, or to be affiliated with collection companies, and have threatened to file lawsuits, garnish wages or to arrest the customers. Victims have not only been contacted by telephone, but have also received threatening letters and emails. Many of the victims who have received these fraudulent calls say that the callers have poor English skills, a strong Indian, Middle Eastern or other foreign accent, and they may use foul language or threaten customers with violence.

The people behind these scams sometimes have their victims' bank account numbers, Social Security numbers or dates of birth, and use this information to enhance their credibility. Regardless, know that no one working for or on behalf of MyCashNow will engage in such behavior. If you do receive such a call, do not give out your personal or financial information. If you're uncertain as to whether a collector actually represents MyCashNow, contact MyCashNow directly.

  • If you are a current MyCashNow customer, you should log into your personal account to confirm the status of any current or previous loans, and/or contact customer service at 1-866-398-2274 to check your account and notify us of the potentially fraudulent call.
  • If you have caller ID, take note of the phone number and of any personal or company names the caller may have mentioned. Although most of these names and numbers are faked or blocked, authorities may be able to track these groups by the similarity of information they give.
  • Contact your local authorities and the Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint about fake payday collection fraud.  The FTC site has a form at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
  • You can report suspicious online activity at the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a joint venture of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, at http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx
