Learn a little about President's Day

President's Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February to honor two of the United States' greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both presidents' birthdays are in February (Washington February 22 and Lincoln February 12).

Originally, both presidents' birthdays were celebrated separately. Washington's (February 22nd) was observed as a federal public holiday and Lincoln's (February 12th) was observed as a public holiday (in most states).

That all changed in 1968 when the 90th Congress wanted to create a uniform system of federal Monday holidays. Three holidays were shifted to Mondays, including Washington's Birthday. This meant that there was no longer a ten day separation between birthdays. Most states just shifted observance of Lincoln's birthday to the same day as Washington's, and although it met with much resistance at first, marketers jumped on the chance to have a catchall phrase to capitalize on the opportunity for long weekend sales. Gradually the term President's Day took hold, and although never officially named , this is what the holiday has become known as.
